Modular sensor nodes

The project, as part of the Synergia Consortium, develops a distributed soil sensing system to support digital twins of agricultural environments. Two modular sensor nodes integrate twelve sensing modalities to continuously monitor below-ground and atmospheric conditions, including nutrient levels (N, P, K), pH, electrical conductivity, moisture, temperature, and gas concentrations like CO₂, CH₄, and H₂.
Using low-cost, scalable hardware such as Raspberry Pi and ESP32 modules, the system wirelessly transfers in-field measurements to cloud platforms, creating reliable communication between sensors and data storage.
A real-time dashboard visualizes current and historical soil dynamics through intuitive plots and map-based insights, helping users compare crop conditions and identify stresses early. This networked approach supports regenerative farming decisions that enhance soil resilience, biodiversity, and resource efficiency over time.
This project was developed together with Mathias Funk and Bahareh Barati from Eindhoven University of Technology.
